BLACK HOLE AND COLLECTIVE WRITING AS A PRACTICE OF CARE (2021–2022)

Over four months in Los Angeles and the high desert of Landers, California, I led a writing workshop with Isabelle Adams, Jasmine Johnson, Haley Penn, and Alex Westfall. First, we worked through readings of collaboratively authored texts, played Surrealist games, and devised our own prompts. Then, we wrote and published Black Hole, a collectively authored story of shape-shifting bellybutton rings, interstellar phenomena, devotion, obsession, and delusion. Pamphlet-stitched in an edition of 50.

The workshop grew out of a UCLA research fellowship to study collaborative writing. Reading Moten and Harney alongside Maria Puig de la Bellacasa and the Situationists, I wrote “Collective Writing as a Practice of Care,” a paper I presented at UCLA Research Week.

In June 2022 we hosted a performance reading of Black Hole at David Horvitz’s 7th Avenue Garden in Los Angeles.
